Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation: I wanted to like this product, but I just don't
Date of Review: Jan 26, 2009
The Bottom Line: I was really disappointed in this product; it just didn't provide much coverage, and the dispenser annoyed me.
I believe the people at Neutrogena to be geniuses -- I've been using their makeup and skincare products for some time. So when Neutrogena finally put out a mineral foundation, I wanted to try it, despite the fact that I usually prefer liquid foundations.
I've tried my best to learn to love this foundation, but it is just too sheer for my taste. I prefer moderate coverage, and this provides light coverage at best. It's feels about the same as pressed or loose powder to me.
It comes in a clever package: a little plastic container with a brush attached to the top. To work it, you're supposed to slide the little plastic protector down, then shake it "gently" a couple times to get the powder to come out onto the brush. Well, gently didn't cut it for me, but after some serious shaking, I finally saw some powder on the brush.
So I started putting it onto my face as best I could. Application didn't go too well -- the powder doesn't go onto the brush evenly, it only dispenses in the middle. And the brush is long, soft and tough to control. When I put it on, little puffs of the powder go up into the air all over the place. And it's so sheer that I can't tell if I'm putting on a little or a lot.
Once I finished brushing it on, the results were OK, but not that great. My skin looked slightly less uneven, but I had to put on more concealer than usual to cover any blemishes or scars.
I bought the "30 - Light to Neutral" shade of the product, and it works pretty well on my skin. I think there are 5 or 6 different shades available, and a similarly-packaged bronzer.
I will definitely not be buying this product again. However, I am continuing to use the one I've already bought. I'll likely use it as powder over my other foundation, or on days when I'm not going to wear any foundation. On other days, I'll go back to my preferred product, Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Enhancer.
Price and availability: This foundation is a little pricey for a drugstore cosmetic, usually costing at least $10-12. You can find it at most drugstores, mass merchandise stores and at Ulta, which is where I bougt mine.
