Truly Magical Family Movie

     When Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium was first released in theaters in 2007, it had only a short run in our area.  Being a big fan of Dustin Hoffman, however, I really wanted to see this one.  The kids got to enjoy the film with their grandparents while my husband and I were off on a date, but my husband saw this on the discount rack at Wal-Mart this week and picked up a copy for us to watch as a family movie this weekend.

     It's rare for a movie to really bring you back to your childhood.  This movie is genuinely a magical experience for the whole family.  Mr. Magorium runs a toy store that is one of a kind.  The kids freely play with the toys, encouraged to learn and explore -- and even get a little messy -- by Mr. Magorium, and his store manager, Mahoney (Natalie Portman).

     Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) is a quirky fellow who has lived a long and happy life exploring the world and bringing joy to children with his toy shop.  Mahoney, his faithful manager, is looking for inspiration.  A promising talent on the piano, with a little finger twitch, she can't seem to find the right notes for her own composition.  Frustrated, she lets Mr. Magorium know she needs a change.  He has a solution in mind -- a surprise!

     Both Hoffman and Portman turned out marvelous, skillful performances in their respective roles.  I knew Hoffman would be great, but he really brought Mr. Magorium to life, from his eccentric and caring personality, to the endearing lisp that is part of the character.  Portman's presentation of Mahoney is a far cry from her regal role in the Star Wars saga.  Her persona here is a little insecure and searching for herself.  Even Portman's body language in the film communicates her character's emotions.

     The story is filled in with two supporting characters.  There is Eric (Zach Mills), a lonely but clever kid with a funky hat collection.  And there is Henry (Jason Bateman), a workaholic accountant, aka "The Mutant" who can't quite see the magical happenings around him.  Eric needs a friend and Henry needs to loosen up.

      The special effects in this film are just amazing.  The toys in the store come to life.  Even the store itself has a character all its own!  Any kid would find this to be a fabulous place to spend the day.  I liked how both modern and old-time toys were featured, bridging a gap between generations in the audience.  Grown-ups will remember how special toys they enjoyed as children were to them!

     But it isn't just a fanciful tale.  There is a positive viewpoint shared about living your life to the fullest, as well as accepting the inevitability of death without morbidity.  It is presented in a way children can understand.  This might be a good film to share with a child who recently lost a beloved grandparent or family friend.  But the lesson will not be lost on adults, either.
