Author's Review

There are many quilting publications on the market today. Even though quilter's are a select market we are a traditional bunch that requires a constant flow of new ideas both to inspire and motivate.

McCall's Quilting magazine is a bit pricey. the charge is 5.99 per issue.
The problem is if you want a reasonable source for patterns you will need magazines to turn to, as the price of new quilting books has skyrocketed.

I have been quilting and doing quilt shows for twelve years so far and this magazine is well done, both for the beginner and the more experienced stitcher.

In the beginning sections, the magazine has about ten different patterns. They are printed on nice thick stock paper. Alot of the cheaper publications give you cheap paper patterns which are very hard to make templates out of with repeated use. There is also color illustrations to inspire you. I also found the accuracy of the directions are very important. Many cheap quilting magazines will actually omit a step or two. Not what you want to deal with half way through your new quilt. This magazine will give you the accuracy you need.

In the back section in each copy is basic quiltmaking instructions. Although this is a concise summary of the entire quilting process, I will be the first to tell you, quiltmaking is an ongoing learning experience. You certainly can't teach it all to yourself from this one page. It can serve as a springboard to exploring ,in depth, the investigation of the quilting techniques, but nothing more.

Many times in the back they also place actual paper patterns. This helps in the template cutting and placement. A very nice addition to the magazine.

There is also a section called the quilter's Connection which allows you a glimpse into other quilters work. You can also send in photos of your own pieces. This is always fun.

To all my sister's and brothers who quilt..keep on stitchin
