2003 Protege ES Bells & Whistles

Date of Review:  Feb 27, 2004
The Bottom Line: Recommend this to anyone looking for a fun to drive, inexpensive compact car.
Review: Just bought this fun to drive compact commuter. My wife has been commuting in her Windstar and we thought it practical to save the miles on the van and get a little commuter. She wanted all the safety features, ABS, Side Air bags etc. I drive...

A Sporty Economy Sedan?

Date of Review:  Jul 12, 2004
The Bottom Line: A leader in the used compact car market. Fun to drive and a solid buy for students.
Review: I recently test drove a used 2003 Mazda Protege LX with about 30,000 miles on the clock, in addition to several other compact cars in the same price range. Overall, I found the Protege to be one of the best cars in its class.

2003 was the...

Most fun to drive car in its class

Date of Review:  Sep 13, 2004
The Bottom Line: Great sporty car for the price. Best handling in its class and gets rave reviews from Car and Driver, Edmunds.
Review: If you're looking for a good used car -- check out the 2003 Mazda Protege. You're likely to find good deals on it because the model has been discontinued and dollar for dollar -- it's one of the more fun to drive cars on the market.

I...

Built like a Mazda

Date of Review:  Dec 9, 2005
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this car! I highly recommend anyone looking at buying this car should talk to others with this specific model. These cars are absolutely plagued with problems.
Review: My closest friends (a couple) purchased a 2003.5 Protege Speed from a Mazda dealer as a new car (it had 8000k in it, but that's another story).

I remember the day they brought it home. This car definitely has a "WOW" factor. Beautiful...

Mazdas have always been known for "road noise"... no biggie!

Date of Review:  Dec 20, 2004
Review: 1) This car looks great and runs great.
2) Mazdas have proven themselves to my family... we have an 87' 626 with 300,000 and an 93' Protege with 150,000... both still running great. Based on these experiences, we feel confident about the...

As Sporty As Budget Sedans Get

Date of Review:  Jan 8, 2004
The Bottom Line: In the budget class, the Protege is as close as it gets to a four-door sports car. However, that sportiness results in a significant measure of noise and harshness.
Review: I found the Protege to be the only car in its class that has a tangible bit of sports-car blood coursing through its economy-car veins. It's not the budget road burner the automotive press makes it out to be--it's still an entry-level sedan,...

$15,000 3 Series

Date of Review:  Jan 22, 2004
Review: After driving the Civic and Corolla, driving the Protege made me realize that this is (or was) the snappiest econocar on the market. The Corolla drove like a Cadillac, not particularly fun to drive, the Civic drove like any other small sedan, but...

Lackluster Performance with High Wind Noise

Date of Review:  Jul 12, 2003
The Bottom Line: My Protege has been a nightmare, and Mazda dealer and the corporation have been dishonest and uncooperative. Buyers Beware!
Review: The Mazda Protege was a respected alternative to the vaunted Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus (although this comes with some reliability baggage). And it was extremely refreshing to be sitting in a car with a different face than a...

Peppy, stylish, cheap.

Date of Review:  Feb 19, 2004
The Bottom Line: A commuter-class car. Far above Hyundai and Kia, better than Nissan and American cars, about comparable to the best Japanese cars.
Review: The 2003 Protege is a tremendous bargain. This was the last year for the model as it is now replaced by the Mazda 3. As such, it's going at a pretty cheap price, supplemented by the fact that the car was produced in huge numbers and then sold to...

Mazdaspeed, a car for the auto-enthusiast

Date of Review:  Aug 17, 2003
The Bottom Line: If your looking for a car that is a good daily driver and will give you a fun time when your looking for it, this is for you.
Review: Intro:

I dont personally own the vehicle but it was recently purchased by a friend of mine. When I first heard about it I was slightly skeptical that for 19000 dollars the car could be as good as she had made it out to be. It had...
