Not as smart as it sounds.

Date of Review:  Sep 5, 2002
The Bottom Line: Value is just not here. This is not a bad car by any means, however Mazda needs to ditch the base models or revise them at no extra cost.
Review: When it comes to economy cars I expect more 'today' than I ever have. With the Toyota Corolla, Dodge Neon, Hyundai Elantra etc. etc. all coming fresh out of the factory in 'bare bones trim' with equipment that once would have been considered 'fully...

Mazda Protege DX A good little car.

Date of Review:  Nov 7, 2006
The Bottom Line: This is a good car, it's a good value used as well, just shop carefully.
Review: In 2002 I had to replace my Aging 1994 Ford Escort. It was in it's death throes as far as the transmission was concerned. And since I was happy with that car I replaced it with the Protege since the cars were the same in many ways.
And I've...

Love this car!

Date of Review:  Feb 10, 2004
Review: I bought this car used, in January of 2004. I could not be happier! It's zippy, it looks cool, I got a FABULOUS warranty from the Mazda dealer, everything works great - CD, A/C, heat, the LATCH system for kids car seats are easy as can be. I am a...

Looking for the perfect used car? THIS IS IT!

Date of Review:  Mar 18, 2004
Review: I purchased a 2002 Mazda Protege yesterday, with 16k miles.... for only $7650. This is a deal that CANNOT be beat! Proteges are priced far lower than Civics or Corollas, yet still offer excellent handling, reliability and value.

This car is awesome!

Date of Review:  Feb 6, 2007
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car to anyone who asked.
Review: My 2002 Protege SE with the 1.6L is the most reliable car I've ever owned. It's also the first Japanese car I've owned. It has over 111,000km on it now and the only problem I've had so far is the radio display. It doesn't always show all of the...

Is it an economy car or a sports sedan? Its both!

Date of Review:  Mar 20, 2002
The Bottom Line: Quick and nimble and totally comfortable. The Protege could be my next car and my THIRD Mazda!
Review: After years of driving used cars with 100K plus miles, it is almost finally time to buy my first new car. The small car market has been dominated by a few main cars, the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus. But what about Mazda's...

2002 Mazda Protege ES

Date of Review:  Aug 26, 2004
The Bottom Line: Excellent value
Review:
**Update**

I no longer have this car. It was flooded by four feet of water from Hurricane Ivan on September 18. The loss of the car doesn't negate it's positives. I went out and bought a used 2002 Protege PR5.

**

I...

Great little car

Date of Review:  Oct 9, 2008
The Bottom Line: This has been a great car. It does everything I want it to do and never fails to make me smile.
Review: I bought my Protege ES new in Sept of 2002 to replace a wrecked 2000 Honda Civic LX as my daily driver. I have owned Hondas, Alfa Romeos, and a BMW, but in my opinion, this one has them all beat. It doesn't seem to have quite the power or the build...

Adequate - nothing more

Date of Review:  Jun 25, 2002
The Bottom Line: A dependable runaround - Japanese style. A fridge on wheels if you like. Keen drivers need not apply.
Review: First of all, a confession....I actually drove the Mazda 323F, which is the hatchback version of the Protege that is not sold in the USA, but putting that aside, this review will concentrate on my experiences with this vehicle.

I will...

A great first car

Date of Review:  Jul 31, 2005
Review: I own a Protege LX, and am pleased with it's performance. Although one sitting in the back seat may lack enough leg room when the front seats are pushed back all the way, overall the leg room is acceptable for a small sedan. I enjoy having the power...
