Is there some Shari Bobbins in Mary Poppins?
Date of Review: Mar 28, 2000
I love this movie for so many reasons - one being it's 2 1/2 hours long and actually holds the attention of all my children aged 2 to 11. that's time to mop floors, make a shopping list, scrub toilets and start dinner.
Next it has one of my all time favorite actors in it the late great Ed Wynne. he's great don't you know!!
Lastly one of my favorite episodes of the Simpsons is the one when they spoof Mary Poppins. From the moment she arrives at the front door - "you said your name was Mary Poppins" and she quickly replies, "no, I clearly said Shari Bobbins." to the end when she gets shocked in the wires I didn't stop laughing. I can't watch the scene where Mary Poppins sings with the snow globe in her hand without seeing Barney drunk and in the gutter and singing "buy me a beer ten cents a glass, please won't you help me I'm freezing my ..."
My kids love Mary Poppins and it's one of the only non-animated tapes that can keep my youngest daughter happy - it's between this one and Inspector Gadget. I choose this one it's the lesser of the Disney evils.
When my oldest daughter was two she would stand at the window with the cord from the blinds in her hand singing the let's go fly a kite song. every aspect of the movie kept her busy and happy - well except for when that animatronic dog chases the kids in the alley. then it's time to hide their eyes.
Mary Poppins is a good story with many messages and of course most little kids miss most of them. they're too busy wondering if you can really make merry go round ponies race, have tea parties on the ceiling, jump into sidewalk pictures, dance with penguins, slide down the banister and if a spoonful of sugar really makes the medicine go down. And also if flying a kite makes all your cares go away. I know during the month of march kite flying is one of my favorite activities and always sparks the kids to ask to watch this movie.
In fact as I write this I'm thinking it's time to go outside fly a kite and come back in and watch some Mary Poppins - of course I will be watching her mannerisms to see if there is a little Shari Bobbins underneath the surface.
