The Man from Snowy River: A Boy Becomes A Man

I remember my very first time watching The Man From Snowy River. I was only about eight years old at my grandma’s house. What brought me to watch it was the picture of what I would later learn to be Jim Craig and his girlfriend Jessica holding the stallion rearing back on his hind legs. I immediately pleaded for my grandma to put it in. A short time later, I came away captivated.

Storyline
Young Jim Craig and his father Henry Craig live in a cabin high in the mountains of the Australian Outback. Growing up Jim learned how to ride horses and knew the mountains like the back of his hand. One day Jim’s dad Henry is killed in a logging accident in the presence of Jim. With no family to go to Jim finds himself with his father’s best friend Spur, played by Kirk Douglas. He goes to work for Mr. Harrison, a wealthy rancher also played by Kirk Douglas, and finds himself in love with Mr. Harrison’s daughter Jessica. It turns out that Mr. Harrison and Spur are twin brothers who cannot get along. The rest of the story is about Jim’s love affair with Jessica, his rise to manhood, and getting back Mr. Harrison’s prized stallion.

Details
It is interesting to note that this movie came about though a poem by A.B “Banjo” Paterson. The movie was directed by George Miller. The Man From Snowy River came out in 1982 and was in color. It was filmed in Australia and runs 102 minutes.

Characters
Probably the most noteworthy actor in the movie is Kirk Douglas who plays both Spur and Mr. Harrison. The leading role belongs to Tom Burlinson, who plays Jim Craig. Jims lover Jessica is played by Sigrid Thornton.

So what captivated me?
Well the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the movie is the scene where Jim Craig and his beautiful grey horse chase the wild horses down the almost vertical descent. Also, the amazing relationships that were forged and the masterful horsemanship that was included. Calling the scenery of the Australian Outback beautiful is an understatement.
