Author's Review
I have been a Madden fan forever. He has always been my favorite real life announcer, and now his games are my favorites. All other football games I have played were boring and just tried too hard to be fun. Madden 2000, however, is not one of those games.
Graphics
The graphics are really good for an N64 game. You can't really make out the players' faces easily (usually because they're wearing helmets), you can still tell who they are by their shape and uniform. The field looks nice. However, when it snows, it looks like flakes of paper are falling from the sky.
Sound
The music in Madden 2000 is good, and they do not have too much noise while you are actually playing the game. You can hear the QB calling out plays, which is a plus. Madden really sounds like Madden, but he never says anything useful.
Gameplay
The game is easy to control, one button to snap, one to set up a pass, and then one of four or five (depending on the play) to pick who to throw to. The running game seems balanced with the passing game, so you end up running AND passing, instead of just one or the other (like in some football games). Defense is realistic, you can juke around to try to get through the offensive line, and when you get a sack you feel like you are really hitting the guy. It is hard to control receivers, but that is not really a problem because you only do that if you are playing with 2 players on the same team.
Pros:
1) The gameplay is great. Easy to control where you are going and who you are passing to.
2) For N64, the graphics are good enough.
3) The music in the game (not during the actual game of course, but during loading screens) is great.
4) Players look real.
5) Very realistic.
6) FRANCHISE MODE!!! This is the best part of the game by far. You can control up to 20 seasons, making trades, draft picks, resigning players, and even creating your own players. You also play the games, unlike some older games that simulated season games.
Cons:
1) The announcers never have anything to say.
2) Franchise mode takes up a whole memory card.
In conclusion...
Madden 2000 is a great game to buy. Renting it is probably not worth it, because you can't get the full value of the game in only 2 or 3 exhibition games. This game is worth shelling out some cash for, because it is a ton of fun.
