Product Review

Lots of clean power at the expense of a large footprint

by   affolter210 ,   Mar 10, 2008

Pros:  extremely attractive. A total work horse that won't quite

Cons:  a seriously large footprint that requires some room for mounting.

The Bottom Line:  Though the unit is expensive and has a large footprint. I believe I found the best amp on the market in it's respective price point.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I'll start by saying that I'm not by any means an audiophile, just a very demanding audio consumer. I've always heard good things about MTX, and after visiting a few local retailers decided on the TE801D.

The salesman gave into a few key mentions that really skewed my decision. For starters, he said that MTX has the lowest rates of returns in his store in every category, and that MTX seriously overbuilds their product. I've had bad luck in past with my Zapco and Clarion amplifiers, so this was very important to me.

I opened up the amplifier to notice a very straight forward design. the board laid out very nicely with what MTX calls their "Intelligent Surface Mount Technology". I did some research and found that the common large gauge jumpers across amplifiers boards cause noise.

I don't want to get to far into the details of their technology as I'm not too technical. I was excited that the amplifier actually included direct hookups for an external capacitor. really makes the install much easier. I guess that's what you would expect from a manufacturer of automotive wiring (streetwires).

It seemed the salesman put a lot of emphasis on the prism EFX, the adjustable lighting on the amplifier. The lights can dance to the music, or be changed to a large variety of available colors. I personally won't be seeing the amplifier as it's going to be hidden under a trim panel, so I turned that feature off. This leads me into my next category.

Since the amplifier will be positioned behind a trim panel it was essential that it have a fan cooling system and not a head sink as the warm air really will not have any place to move. MTX's design has a computer controlled fan that monitor the volume level and temp across the board and adjusts the speed of the fan accordingly. The fan brings cold air in the center of the amp and sends it over the warm board forcing the hot air out the sides.

So far I have yet to get the amp to overheat. I go on long road trips with the stereo at very high volumes, and haven't had a single complaint from the amp.

Would I buy this amp again? yes
Would I recommend it to a friend? yes
