When I turned eleven, I was given a T-shirt for my birthday. I was also given a copy of the movie that went along with the T-shirt: The Lost Boys.
Eleven years later, I still have the movie and I still have the T-shirt. As I write this, my t shirt and I are eating a piece of Birthday cake. Actually, that is just my way of justifying eating two pieces, because my t shirt is on a low cal diet and passed on the cake this year.
I'm happy to report that the movie and the shirt are still in great condition. I wear the shirt often, and watch the movie at least once every six months. The shirt, while a bit faded, has that timeless quality to it. A black t shirt. Simple lettering. I wish I could say I filled it out better in some parts and less in others, but maybe if I stop eating this cake I will have that problem solved.
The movie is comparable (to the timeless part, not the part concerning my poor body image). While you could date the movie on Corey Haim's wardrobe alone, The Lost Boys remains a must-see horror movie for the new Millennium (yes, I actually said Millennium, but you can't kill me; it's my birthday). Even in today's climate of "Smart Horror," "Special Effects Super Thrillers," and "Blair Witchesque," films, The Lost Boys is fresh, funny, and transgenerational. Filled with just the right amount of blood, laughs, and a great soundtrack, you can show it to virtually anyone in any age category and they will still enjoy it. Even a decade later it has not fallen onto the horror b-list; the jokes are not relevant to only one time period, the horror is not cheesy, and the characters are contemporary.
For the Vampire lover, Lost Boys is a must own. This movie, even at eleven, "humanized" the vampire for me. They weren't just creeping around saying, "Bleah! Bleah!" like a lot of other vampire movies had portrayed them as doing. They were talking, crying, and cracking jokes. They had different personalities. They had cool clothing. This fascinated me and I think it is what ultimately hooked me to this movie, and Vampires in general. It was and always will be more than just a mindless monster movie.
The Lost Boys, like my shirt, is a friend I come back to year after year. While I'm not as surprised when I watch it as I used to be (Yes, I know every word. No, I don't repeat the lines out loud to annoy others!) I always leave the movie feeling happy and in love with it all over again.
So I obviously recommend this movie. I think you should rent it for my birthday, or my belated birthday if you are reading this after May Eleventh. Watch it again and remember your crush on The Corey's or Jami Gertz. Watch it for the first time and marvel at how modern it actually is. I am guessing that my shirt has about five more years left before it turns into a very long thread in my washing machine. The movie, however, will always be around!
