Product Review

Lost in a very boring game!

by   saraab ,   Apr 9, 2007

Pros:  Survival concept is unique

Cons:  Game is glitchy and buggy, game freezes a lot, too easy to die.

The Bottom Line:  This game has a good concept but fails to execute it in a way that makes it compelling and fun to play.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

As the title may suggest, this game is about surviving in the wild on your own. You wash up on an island after having your ship crash and you are expected to survive off the island alone. You play as a male character, and after not too long, if you can make it that long, you find a female character named Skye whom you have to support. The story isn't much more in-depth than this.

I did not have a very fun time playing this game. First of all I must have died about 6-7 times in the first 5 min of play just because I could not find any food. The game has 3 gauges, hunger, water and overall health I believe. The gauges drop really fast, so you have to constantly eat and drink water or else you will... well die and then its game over. The gauges are also dependent on one another so if you do not keep them all above a reasonable level then you will.. die and its game over. After only about 1-3 min of walking your water gauge will go down to empty as well. Food and water supply is not very abundant so you have to constantly go back to the same areas and constantly eat food and water. This is not very realistic as in even if you were stranded on an island you would not have to eat 10 coconuts every 1 min of being there just to fill your water gauge up. Its a very tedious process to constantly have to eat and drink especially since food and water are not abundant.

Things only get worse, once you find your female companion (or should I say burden), your levels will drop about 3 times as fast. The reason is you have to support Skye, and she cannot do ANYTHING by herself because she has lost her glasses. You have to take her by the hand and do everything for her, which again is really annoying.

During this game you will basically be spending all your playing time just looking for food and water and eating and drinking it just to stay alive. Skye is dependent on you even if you leave her at your house, if you can get that far. If you leave her at the house she cannot do anything by herself, so you have to go back to the house constantly in order to feed her or give her water, or else you will both die and its game over. This makes traveling the huge island and trying to explore even more difficult because you will find that after only a few min of walking you will already have to return to the house to give water and food to Skye.

Another problem with this game is it is very glitchy and buggy. For example the game will lock up at the item screen, and the only way to get rid of that is to turn off your system and start from the point where you last saved, so remember to save often if you buy this game! The game will also lock up in many more places such as when playing the mini games, so be prepared for this when buying it.

The good points of this game are that the survival concept is one that is not overused and is unique to this game, however it is poorly executed in this game. It could be done a lot better. The mini games are fun, but they take a long time to figure out, and you will fail many times before getting it right. An example of a mini game in this game is there is a game where you have to make fire. This game also takes advantage of the unique features of the DS system especially during the mini-games. The graphics are also good, and are much better than the game boy advance type graphics you see in a lot of DS games.

I will be honest I did not play this game very far, because I just couldn't, especially after dying so many times and encountering a few lock-ups, it became a more frustrating experience than a fun one. Games are supposed to be fun, and this is definitely not one that is very fun to play. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this game to anyone, and especially not for children who get easily frustrated by video games. If forging for food and water and dying is your idea of a fun game, then this is the game for you!
