Poor man's home theatre.
Date of Review: Apr 25, 2003
The Bottom Line: Once again, I would only recommend this for home theatre use. If you plan on using them for computer speakers, get ready for the hiss.
First off let me start by saying that these speakers are better suited for a home theatre instead of a computer for 2 reasons. 1: Unless your computer is your primary entertainment, these are almost too much power, and too pricey for a computer, you would be better off with the Z-640s. 2: The slight hiss is no big deal when sound is comming through the speakers, but at a computer the hiss would drive a man insane due to the fact that computer speakers are meant to be left on.
Having said that, I would only recommend this system as a lower budget home theatre system. With 1 optical and 1 coaxial input for DTS and Dolby Digital, you can hook up a DVD player and perhaps an Xbox. Now some might worry about the fact that this system has no red/white audio input. No worries there, simply buy an adapter that takes a RCA stereo source and converts to a minijack. Simple as that, then you can plug the jack into the front port, or even better, the 2 channel input in the back. The simply use prologic 2 for great surround from VCRs and systems such as the gamecube.
As for performance, I couldn't be happier. I have played Star Wars Ep2 and Lord of the Rings on DVD running through optical testing out the DTS and DD. The sound is much better than I expected. Comparable to many more expensive home theatre systems. Some may even feel the need to turn the bass down a bit.
The setup and controls are very user friendly. Even those that have issues working audio and video systems should have no trouble adjusting speaker levels and other settings.
I tested prologic 2 with gamecube games encoded for use with it. Channel separation is amazing, almost that of 5.1!
My only problem aside from the hissing is the digital volume control. Sometimes you find that one point is too loud, while the next notch down is a tad too quiet, this is not a huge deal though. Aside from that the speaker wires that come with it are a little short and thin. I would recommend getting some 16 g wire.
