Author's Review
I picked this fan up at a trade show from a vendor for $10.00. However, they are available at ACE, Truevalue, and Do It Best stores.
Since it was such a good deal, I thought it would make a great backup to the Patton fan I own and have also reviewed here.
This fan is the bomb:
*ALl metal construction
*fully balanced blades.
*9 foot cord, three prong ground
*Rubber feet prevents scuffing.
*Heavy duty PSC motor with three speeds and oil ports.
*Front grille comes off easy, just remove six screws.
*Five year warranty from Lakewood.
This fan is every bit as good as the New Haven IN made Patton I also own.
One advantage this fan has is the lo speed is truly low. Its very quiet at that speed yet still moves a good volume of air. The three paddle shaped blades make it a tad quieter than the Patton. Yet it blows up a storm when you crank it on high speed. At that speed, if you are a light sleeper like me, you won't hear a thing!
Because the blades are statically balanced at the factory, this fan operates very smoothly with no annoying vibrations.
Like the patton, this unit features a 4 pole, 1/6HP PSC motor courtesy of McMillian Electric, Woodville, WI. It's a USA made unit and has a front and rear oil port. I place two drops of 3 in 1 electic motor oil each spring. The only drawback to this motor design is the bearings. THey are pressed in sleeve type, not ball bearing and are not easily replaced. However, I would guess that the supplier of the motor, McMillian electric might help should the bearings fail.
However, I have not had to replace a motor on either this unit or the Patton unit. And I use both fans heavily year 'round.
The blue blades contrasted with the bright chrome grille make this fan a wonderful addition to anyone's home.
It can be pivoted 360 degrees and used as a Hassock fan to pick up cool air from the floor and circulated it throughout the room. This is a great feature on those cool spring or fall evenings.
For household ventilation, place this unit on a sturdy table, open your windows, and have the fan blow OUT, not in. When I do this, my 1000 sq ft townhouse is ventilated in five minutes! This saves $$$ on the A/C bill.
Again, this fan is tops. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who is tired of cheap throwaway made in China fans.
This fan WILL cost a bit more, but it pays for itself in usefullness and durability.
**************ADDITION*****************
With regard to durability, I forgot to note that the motor design is called an "open frame" This means that there are large vents in the motor housing which allows good air flow thru the motor. By keeping the motor cool, the bearings last longer and the stator windings don't break down so quickly. This, I feel, is a critical attribute in the high quality of these fans.
******************UPDATE***********************************
With great sadness, I have to report that Lakewood has also moved production to China. The five year warranty has now been replaced by a one year warranty. If warranties reflect confidence in a product, then lakewood must not have much.
