Author's Review
I was looking for a 4-slice toaster small enough to fit in the appliance garage with my bread maker. But the published specs didn't include the dials (in front) or the crumb trays (out back). Placing the crumb trays in front, under the dials, would save about 1/2" of depth. But it's attractive enough to stay out on my counter.
The smooth, stainless steel finish shows fingerprints, but otherwise it's easy to clean. That said, the Kitchen Aid makes excellent toast, and after all, that's what a toaster is supposed to do. I especially like the bagel setting, which produces a golden brown inner surface for buttering, while slightly warming the outside. The dual controls allow for different tastes. It also has a warming setting, but no rack. I found the warming feature left breads a little dry, so I use my microwave instead, which leaves them warm AND moist.
Another convenient feature--the levers will not operate (lock down) when the toaster is not plugged in. This is a benefit for those of us who have waited for toast, only to discover we had not plugged it in...duh!
