Kingston Data Traveler USB 2.0
Date of Review: Nov 17, 2006
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this flash drive. It does exactly what it is meant to do with no problems.
Techology just keeps getting more amazing all the time. Finding a convenient way to transport data files is now easier than ever!
What I wanted: I have an iBook G4 and an iMac Duo Core that replaced a PC. We visit our kids who have computers and since we have dial-up I wanted an easy convenient way to transfer files between computers in both Mac and PC format. I wanted something that I could easily do genealogy database backups. I wanted something easily portable. I also wanted something with enough MB that I would not have to clear it off right away.
Why I bought: My husband had previously bought a USB flash drive for his computers. As soon as I saw it I knew that a flash drive would meet my needs. I chose the Kingston Data Traveler because of the rebate offered. This flash drive has a read speed up to 6 MB/sec and a write speed of up to 3 MB/sec. It came with a cap to protect the end and a small connection cord to hook to a lanard or keychain.
Performance: I bought the flash drive about six months ago. It is really a plug and play device. At the time I bought the Kingston Data Traveler I had the iBook G4 and an older PC running Windows XP. My husband's computer and laptop are both PC format. I transfer files between all. For both systems all I had to do was plug it into the USB port. It worked flawlessly on the iBook and speed was fast. An message would pop-up on the PC telling me the flash drive would be slower because the USB port wasn't a 2.0. It was still fast enough. When I switched to the iMac there were no problems and data transfer is rather fast. File transfer is as simple as click and drag. On both systems the flash drive needs to be ejected not that it ejects the actual flash drive from the port but it shuts down the drive making it safe to remove from the flash drive. I've had absolutely no problems with the Kingston Data Traveler.
In fact I was so impressed that I went back for another one to store my genealogy back-up files on. I update these everytime I work on my database and one back-up is always stored in a safety deposit box. With two flash drives I can rotate. It is so much easier and cheaper than burning CDs!
What I like: The portability can't be beat! It is small and easily fits in my purse. Transferring files is so easy. I like that it is Windows and Mac compatible.
