Author's Review
For any Louis Armstrong or traditional jazz fan, this 4-CD box set is essential. For anyone not familiar with Satchmo but would like to know the essence of his brilliance as a musician, buy this set!!
The music was recorded in Chicago and New York from November, 1925 through April, 1930. The set has great liner notes, and gives a wealth of detail about Armstrong, the different incarnations of bands he led during this time and the context of the material presented.
Songs include: St. Louis Blues, Dallas Blues, Mahogany Hall Stomp, Basin Street Blues, Alligator Crawl, Cornet Chop Suey, Muskrat Ramble, Two Dueces, Heebie Jeebies, Twelfth Street Rag, and 58 more!!
The music, although recorded over 70 years ago, is timeless. Satchmo's cornet playing and scat, show the originality, power and genius of a pure jazz prodigy. The music here influenced so many later styles and musicians that I feel his effect is still undervalued and overlooked.
