I remember the sheriff on Dukes of Hazzard calling his deputy "Dipstick" but it didn't seem especially complimentary. Nevertheless, Harley-Davidson has taken that name for their ankle high chukka boots with steel toes.

The Dipstick boot is made under contract by a maker like Wolverine, a famous maker who makes a lot of Harley-Davidson motor gear.

Safety boots are a big help to motorcycle riders who must make up for their motorcycle's lack of protection if they have an accident or take a spill. I know it's not pleasant to think of this, but riding a motorcycle exposes the rider to much more danger than riding in a car. That is why most states require helmets, and even if they didn't I would still wear one after surviving a 75 mph accident on the freeway early this summer. My helmet and motorcycle boots were part of the reason I'm here today, well at least the helmet was, and the boots kept my feet safe so I can still walk fine.

The boots are just above the ankle to provide support and cover the tender ankle bone and have a padded collar around the top of the boot and tongue to keep your feet comfortable and a liner that breathes, also to keep your feet from getting tired on a long ride.

I own several pairs of Harley-Davidson boots and they are always top quality whatever their style. These Dipstick boots are a little bit like combat or jump boots with a lace up closure all the way to the top. It has D ring eyelets on the shoe part and quick lace up doo dads on the shaft where you just cross your laces around them but don't have to thread it through. It makes the boots easy to put on and take off and if this is the style of boot you want, it will be perfect for you.

The boots have a Goodyear welt construction and the sole is oil proof and moisture resistant. The Goodyear welt is the method of sole attachment and is more expensive than other methods because it means they can be re-soled many times if you like to do that. It's an indication of the care taken in their construction and is a feature of expensive shoes.

For decoration, they have a metal Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo on each ankle. The sole also has Harley-Davidson inlaid in orange rubber. They are available in both men's and women's sizes in black.
