Author's Review
I own (have owned), a Sony Video 8, Samsung Mini-DV, and now the Sony DVD92, and I have to say I'm extremely pleased with the mini disc format.
I'm not sure what other people use their home vides for, but the 30 minute time doesn't really bother me. I'm not going to make my relatives sit through more than 30 minutes of home videos anyways.
Very happy with the 'low light' capabilities of this camera. My Samsung was absolutely horrible indoors and I was really worried about this. However, the Sony does great under natural lighting. If its "too dark", just turn on the indoor lights and that is more than enough.
The finalizing of the disc to make it viewable on DVD players doesn't take that long. So far 6-9 minutes for what I've done so far for each disc. Basically, just put the camera down, walk away, and come back and its done...no biggie.
Also, you don't have to search for the last place you recorded after reviewing your video. It automatically starts recording where you left off. How cool is that!
Picture quality is superb and I LOVE the fact that I can just throw it in my computer or tv and watch it immediately w/o having to connect the camera to the tv or something else. Also, its great to be able to copy a DVD in my computer and send it out immediately--I really love this format.
Just a couple of words of caution so far. 1). You really should use a read write RW disc. I found out that with a -R disc you can't delete a scene. Kind of problematic since I had a little blooper I wanted to edit out, but couldn't w/o using software on my computer.
Second, don't go past the 30 minute warning light for the disc. While practicing with the camera, I did that, and for some reason I lost what was on the disc. Still haven't figured that one out yet. Just glad it was a practice disc.
Anyway, very happy with this, compact in size, great recording, easy to use. And if you think about it, you don't need the USB line because you can record direct from disc to computer.
