Author's Review
Guns & Ammo Magazine
Guns & Ammo is a monthly magazine focusing on guns, ammo, hunting, shooting, and various shooting sports as well as exotic destinations in which to pursue the hunting and shooting.
One of the older glossy gun magazines, Guns & Ammo has been in publication for 50 years now so it has good longevity and the data base of back stories available from the publisher is one reason the magazine has a lot of credibility.
I started reading it in the 1960s as a teen and have seen the magazine go through its various changes in format, however, the publication still looks quite a bit as it did with the exception of a new writing staff, of course.
The various departments are published in each monthly issue and include an editorial; letters to the editor; Shooter's Showcase for things new; Gun Notes illuminating a particular aspect of the shooting sports; Handgunning; Reloading for shooters who like to roll their own ammunition, and Questions where readers can ask about their guns.
There are several feature articles each month concerning various guns, shooting, reloading, and hunting subjects. This month there is an article on the Kahr TP45; the Ruger SP101 in .327 Magnum; the Sharps Carbine; the CZ452 Scout; Wheels Afield that covers the all terrain vehicles used off road; and Persian Ibex hunting. The articles are well written and the staff is quite knowledgeable and creative in their writing styles.
A minor con can be mentioned where reading about guns gets a bit repetitive because of the narrowness of the subject matter. Lots of nostalgic articles are therefore published like this month's Colt Police Positive Special - about a gun made back in the 1930s and 40s. Similarly, one author laments the demise of the Colt Woodsman .22 Automatic Pistol. This gun has not been produced since 1977 so you can see that the articles have a way of repeating themselves. Lots of articles are also written on the famous old Slab Sides the Colt Government Model .45 Automatic Pistol and its myriad clones. This month's clone is a Kimber SIS .45 Automatic Pistol - a variant of the old original with a laser rail on the dust cover.
The average magazine runs just under 100 pages and has several glossy color pages as well as many well done black and white photographs. Guns & Ammo represents a good value as magazines go today with about the same number of ads as its competition.
Newsstand price per issue is $4.99 while subscriptions are available for $12.00 for 12 issues and $19.97 for 24 issues, which represent significant savings over the single issue price.
