Great Vehicle Great Reliability except for A/C
Pros:
Reliable, Powerful, Fun to Drive, Insta-trac rules, Speed Compensated Volume Rules, Quiet and Smooth
Cons:
Needs better AC Compressor, Needs better stock speakers, Gase Mileage
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend the 1995 year because it is one of the most reliable years for the suburban

Author's Review
I've had my Suburban for many years, it currently has 245,678 miles on it. It has the original engine and original transmission. Everything on this car works perfectly except the A/C and the Radio. I've used my Suburban for cross country trips from California to Boston. I would never trade this Suburban for any other Suburban. It has never let me down, the only things that have ever gone out are the A/C and one of the speakers of the radio. However, I believe that the only reason the A/C isn't as reliable as the car is because this was only the second year after the switch to R134a from R12 refrigerant, therefore compressors of the time weren't yet perfected to compensate for the added pressure etc needed for R134a. I have been offroading in this car plenty of times and especially on low range you can go almost anywhere. The model I have is the 1500 LT 4wd, this engine is pretty adequate for towing, and four wheeling. The only things on this SUV that are not stock are the shock absorbers which are Monroe Sensatracs, and the Muffler which is a Flo-Pro Performance Muffler. The radio works fine except some of my speakers are now cracking, however, I love the way that the volume of the radio changes as my speed changes (when you go faster it gets louder, when you slow down it gets more quiet). For a car of this size one would think that ride quality would be horrible, however, I find that riding in my suburban is more satisfying that riding in a 1995 toyota camry in terms of ride quality, handling, and overall noise. Also when driving on uncertain road conditions you can switch from 2 wheel hi to 4 wheel hi via insta-trac 4wheeldrive without stopping. This is useful when driving in the snow because you don't have to stop to switch to 4 wheel drive just because the road ahead of you is icy for a few hundred feet.
