Author's Review
Glengarry Glen Ross is a film that is made up of pure testosterone. More so than any war or action film. Glengarry Glen Ross is a film about angry depressed men. Men who work in a environment that is a lot like a battlefield. Glengarry Glen Ross, is the type of film that has big brass balls, and isn't afraid to stick 'em in your face and say, 'this is a man's world.'
Glengarry Glen Ross has some of the best actors and the best acting in a film ever. The cast: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Pryce. Directed by James Foley, a director who has never made another good film, save the Twin Peaks television series. The tageline for the film is, "Lie. Cheat. Steal. All in a Day's Work." Damn straight. You think you've got a hard job? Ha! Try working for Mitch & Murray.
The film is based on David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. And that's all it is essentially; a play on film. But who cares when you've got actors this good and dialogue so fantastically wicked.
The Plot
Honestly, there isn't much of one. It's all about dialogue and characters. Glengarry Glen Ross is about a bunch of veteran salesman who work for Mitch & Murray. Their life consists of lying to people, and finding the sucker. They sell land, but they can't sell it to anyone if they don't have good leads. The Glengarry sale leads are the ones to get, but since no one in the office can close, they don't get them. As Alec Baldwin's character Blake so eloquently puts: "These are the new leads. These are the Glengarry leads. To you, these are gold; you do not get these. Why? Because to give them to you would be throwing them away. These are for closers." It's like waving cheese in front of a mouse.
The Characters
Shelley Levene: Shelly, aka, The Machine is played by the marvelous Jack Lemmon; in one of the best roles he's ever had. The Machine is on a rough spot. He isn't selling anything, and he desperately needs to. His daughter is in the hospital, and although it is never said, you get the feeling that it's the only family he's got. Jack Lemmon's character is the heart of the film. He's not a perfect character, in fact he's far from it. He's actually quite a jerk, and he's got a big mouth; it's that mouth that get's him in trouble later on in the film. But for all the wrongs he commits, the audience still ends up caring for him. His character is the most human.
Blake: Played by Alec Baldwin. Although he's only on screen for a total of seven minutes and twelve seconds, he is probably the most memorable character in the film. It's the best role Baldwin has ever had, and he is nothing short of amazing. His lines are some of the best in cinematic history.
Blake's Great Lines:
"Put that coffee down! Coffee's for closers only. You think i'm fu_king with you? I am not fu_king with you. I'm here from downtown, I'm here from Mitch & Murray, and I'm here on a mission of mercy! Your names Levene? You call yourself a salesmen, you sonofabit_h?"
"The good news is, you're fired. The bad news is, you got, all you got, is one week to regain your jobs. Starting with tonight; starting with tonight's sits. Oh, have I got your attention now?"
"You got leads. Mitch & Murray paid good money. Get their names to sell them. You can't close the leads you're given, you can't close sh_t, you are sh_t, hit the bricks pal, and beat it, 'cause you are going out."
Moss: What's your name?
Blake: F_ck you! That's my name. You know why, mister? Cause you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I drove an eighty thousand dollar BMW. That's my name.
Ricky Roma: Played by Al Pacino. Roma is one of the best smooth talkin' salesmen out there. He's the only one in the office who really has any respect for Shelly. Roma lives by the A,B,C's, (Always, Be, Closing). He's the best salesman in the office, and he's the only who is really doing his job.
Dave Moss: Played by Ed Harris. Moss is my favorite character in the film, because he reminds me the most of myself. He acts the way I would to Blake. He knows exactly what he wants, and he is looking for a sucker to do it for him. I like this character, and Harris pulls off yet another great role with him.
John Williamson: Played by Kevin Spacey. Spacey knows how to be evil, see Seven. He knows how to be cool, see American Beauty & The Usual Suspects. Here, he plays a sniveling jerk. His character is the root of all the problems in the film. You will not like his character, but you'll love Spacey's performance.
Those are the characters that stand out the most in the film. Glengarry Glen Ross was one of the best films of the 90's. It's a film I can watch over, and over again. I don't think I've ever seen a film that had such great performances and wonderful dialogue. A must see.
