Author's Review
I'm 23 and after reading magazines like YM and Seventeen my whole life, I was getting a little old for them. No longer were crushes and most embarrassing moments, or high school Q&A important to me anymore. I needed to find a magazine more geared to women in their 20's and there really aren't a lot of those magazines out there.
I tried Elle but it was filled with too many advertisements and not very helpful in the fashion or beauty departments unless you are a multi-millionaire and can afford to spend $1,000 on a purse and $30.00 on a shade of lipstick. I recieve a complimentary subscription to it and barely scan any of the articles when I get it each month.
Without going into detail on every magazine I have picked up throughout these past few years, I will say the selections are few and the quality of those few aren't that great. They are either laden with advertisements or geared to the daughters of George W. Bush. Even if I had the money to spend on these overpriced items, I can't say that I would ever buy any of them. I guess some people are more frugal with their money.
Anyway, back on the subject at hand, I have read Glamour before but never found an appeal to it, maybe because I was still in my high school days and the subject matter was too mature for me, now giving it a second chance I have found that it is perfect for me at the age that I am in.
Glamour is up to the minute on the newest fashion trends and instead of listing all the designer names and prices, it gives you suggestions on how to achieve those looks at a fraction of the price. As far as makeup goes, it doesn't tell you that you need to buy expensive brands of make-up to get those desired looks, more than once I have seen CoverGirl cosmetics listed with their hot new products to try.
The Q&A section isn't all about how to get the attention of that guy in class or what to do if your locker gets jammed in front of your crush, it is geared more along the lines of sex and relationships and problems at work and not work as in flipping burgers at McDonald's.
Yes, as with all magazines, it has it downfall. Ads and lots of them but every fashion magazine is bound to be full of them. Glamour has a lot but no where near the amounts that Elle or Cosmopolitan have.
If you are in the market for a magazine that is more geared to 20-30 year olds and not filled with quotes from the Backstreet Boys or Brittany Spears, Glamour may be the one for you. Give it a try, if you don't like it, you only spent $3.50 on it and can use it as liner in your cat's litter box or for kindling to start your fire this winter but I think you may be surprised and actually enjoy it.
