Author's Review
I never had actually watched a single episode of Gilmore Girls until about a year ago. On my sister's birthday in January of 2006 my sister-in-law and I bought season one for a birthday present. Assuring me of its quality and wholesomeness, my sister coaxed me into watching the first season of the show with her.
After watching for approximately 10 minutes I was already enticed by the chatty dialogue, the seemingly rapid pace in which the plot for each episode engrossed my disregard and demanded my undivided attention, and the simple story line that practically any woman can connect with on some level.
Gilmore Girls is a weekly hourlong program that evolves 3 generations of Gilmore women along with other important characters; some disposable, some not so much. Initially you might think the story is about just the mother 'Lorelai' ,who got pregnant at 15 and left her 'oh so terrible at home life of being wealthy' to become her own person. She takes this journey with her daughter 'Lorelai' (Rory for short), becoming a housekeeper at the Independence Inn located in the quaint town of Stars Hollow and living with Rory in a potting shed behind the Inn; she works her way up to hotel manager. There is also another "Gilmore Girl" that isn't given the credit I think she deserves. That is the mother, Emily Gilmore. She ,to Lorelai, is what went wrong in her life. Lorelai's life long stuggle not become her mother, seems in vain. Due to the struggles she faced and her demanded independence Lorelai has actually morphed into a slightly more relaxed version of her mother. This program might at first seem to be a lucid, simple idea for a TV show but you have to give the creators credit for the originality. It entices, engrosses and persuades.
THE CHATTY DIALOGUE
When sitting down to watch the Gilmore Girls go at it, you may have to take a few minuets to catch up. Their chatty dialogue seemingly goes a mile a second. The Mother Lorelai is a street scholar on all things pop culture. Lorelai has passed all this 'useless' knowledge down to her, now 15 yr old, daughter Rory. Rory is a literal scholar of all things in general. She had been reading intense literature since she was 7. Their useless knowledge, quick wits combined with the 4 gallons of coffee they both dissipate daily makes for much high paced extremely interesting dialogue.
RAPIDLY UNFOLDING ENTICING PLOT
When watching the first season, of what my sister and I now refer to as 'the Girls', I find that in the first 3 mineuts I'm completely enthralled in which ever episode I'm watching. The story line being ongoing makes it arduous for you to justify missing a single episode. To coin a new phrase 'once going Gilmore you'll never go back'..
CHARACTERS THAT WOMEN EASILY IDENTIFY WITH
Every woman is either/or a mother a daughter a grandmother. If you are any of those before mentioned you will find it easy to relate with. This show is all about the relationship of the 3 Gilmore women. On occasion another Gilmore girl is thrown into the mix: Emily's Mother in Law of Emily Gilmore amusingly enough her name happens to be... Lorelai... The issues faced within this common triangle, while comical, are not that different than those found in many mother/daughter/granddaughter relationships.
My overall opinion of the first season, and for all seasons of Gilmore Girls for that matter, is more than satisfactory. I absolutely love this show and feel that those who will immerse themselves in this show for at least the pilot episode will share my constant desire to see what will happen next. Since watching the first season,I have watched the remaining five season and now watch the subsequent episodes religiously. I must say I don't watch much TV but this show is the only one I do watch weekly.
