Author's Review
I bought this product from the informercial. It is honestly the first thing I have ever purchased without consulting people, or at least checking out opinions online. But my sandwich maker fell off my freezer a while back and I needed something like this to replace it, and they had this smokin' deal where you get two, two shakers for mixing stuff, and two spatulas plus a cookbook for like $50. You can't hardly beat that with a stick.
So the first thing I realized is that it does not cook anywhere near as fast as the commercial claimed, and a mini-cake with candy bars in it (a featured recipe) was supposed to take about 7 minutes. It took 15 to make sure the cake was cooked. It was delicious, also, moist all the way through, evenly cooked and yummy.
The nonstick surface is the bomb! When that cake was done, it just like fell out onto my plate, so clean up involves a napkin, folks. Almost no clean up unless cake batter or eggs or melted cheese or something oozes out the side and gets on the plastic parts. Other than that, cleanup is a snap.
So the cord is about 3 feet long, and it has a post underneath that you can wind it around for storage so it isn't in the way, getting all tangled up in your appliance closet. That is a big plus in my book.
It's not as attractive as some other appliances I have, but it isn't ugly, either. It is gray and darker gray, so it isn't like the color clashes. It's just not all shiny, but it doesn't matter because I keep it under my cupboard when not in use.
So I've made just about everything in it that I thought you could make in it. Cakes, omelets, desserts, chicken breasts...you can cook pretty much anything in there, without added fat, and even sticky crap like melted candy bars or chocolate chip pancakes come out and just need to be wiped off.
Let me say a word about omelets, since it is in the title of this review. I love them. Now, I can't eat egg yolks, but I make egg white omelets on a regular basis and my biggest complaint is that the middle never gets done when I use a conventional pan, even if the outside is burnt crispy. But with this thing, I can leave the egg in there until the center is set and not have the outside all crispy-crittered. My omelets have ham or bacon, 2 egg whites, some kind of flavor salt like Butter Buds, spinach or tomatoes, cheese, and mushrooms. All this fits in one side and what is cool is that the eggs puff up so much that my kids ask me to cook omelets just so they can watch the lid rise, like magic. Yeah, true story. Then the eggs come out perfectly cooked, everything is tasty and moist, and it is just really a good thing.
I have two of these, like I mentioned before, and I use them almost daily, truthfully. They are so lightweight that even little old Grannies can use them, and you just dump crap in, check it once in a while, then dump it all out. There's no flipping or turning, so it is really easy. The ready light lets you know when it is hot enough to cook in, so that's a plus, too.
All in all, these are a good investment. If you do much baking or omelet making, they are really perfect for single-serving size things. If you have a large family, you might think about getting the jumbo sized ones, because these are just about right for two servings; one in each side.
