Before I bought this machine at Home Depot online, I had done a lot of research and found many positive reviews for this machine, particularly on the Home Depot website. So we bought the machine and have nothing but problems since.
This machine was bought in September 2008. 2 weeks later the transmission went bad and was repaired under warranty. I knew after that happened that this was not going to be the machine for us, so tried to exchange at the local Home Depot and they refused. If you buy any products at Homedepot.com, you cannot return the product to the local store. At least that was the case with this appliance. So buyer beware of that.
This month as of April 2009, the transmission went bad again, along with a motor and control board. Once again it was fixed under GE's warranty. By the way this machine does have a transmission but is designed differently then the old transmission technology.
It's obvious to me that this machine has some kind of flaw in it's design and probably is going to continue giving problems.
Fortunately my wife and I purchased the extended warranty through Home Depot, because I have no doubt we will be using it. There is a no lemon policy in that warranty which states that if you have 3 or more repairs regarding the same thing in first year of warranty, they will replace, The way this machine has been, it's very probable that will happen.
GE has fixed this under their warranty, and no doubt will continue to fix until their warranty runs out in September of 2009. I wrote GE about this, and from their reply they could care less. My advice would be to stay away from any GE washing machines. I personally will not buy again any product with the name GE. again.
What's puzzling to me is why there are so many positive reviews of this machine on the Home Depot website. I have a feeling they are false positives, that are not from real owners of this product. If you look at the reviews on this type of machine outside of Home Depot, you begin to find many negatives. Not necessarily of this model machine, but of similar models.
As far as the Hydrowave technology goes, it seems to work ok when it works, but not particulary impressed. Clothes seem to come out clean, but based on my experience I would not recommend the Hydrowave technology. Actually the agitation, does not seem forceful enough, even though clothes do seem to come out clean.
My wife are going to try and get at least 5 years out of this, because the extended warranty is for another 4 years. We don't feel like throwing away $500.00, even though I would like to just junk this thing and get another machine. If it hadn't been for the extended warranty we bought, basically we probably would have thrown $500.00 away. The repairman said that they may change the design of replacement parts if they have a lot of problems with certain parts. As a matter of fact the repairman says he has repaired a lot of these.
Perhaps things will get better, but I don't have high hopes. Stay away from this machine! Also be careful of what you buy from Homedepot.com, because you may not be able to return to store.
My advice would be to avoid any GE machine with hydrowave technology.
