1999 Escort SE

I recently bought a Blue Oval Certified 1999 'Scort from a dealer. Coming "down" from a Crown Victoria, I didn't expect much more than gas mileage. WOW, was I wrong.
What I thought would be a wimpy 4 cylinder econo-box turned out to be a smooth, refined little car with power steering, windows, mirrors,locks, a/c and a nice stereo. It handles like a sports car and takes off like a rocket. At 65 on the freeway, the 'Scort just purrs quietly plus I get 32 mpg regularly.

It was listed among Consumers Union "recommended" used cars, and that's no surprise. Built on the Mazda Protege platform, this 3rd generation Escort seems to have an "all in one piece" solid feeling that gives me a sense of security despite its small size.

Unfortunately, the company has decided to stop selling the Escort. They are offering the Focus instead--a car whose bizarre styling just doesn't appeal to many.

What a shame. The 'Scort is such an affordable, sweet little car with most luxuries standard.
