I bought my 1996 Ranger XLT, extended cab, 2WD, auto transmission, in November, 2002. I drive it to and from work every day. The truck is extremely reliable and comfortable and is a pleasure to drive and own. It has great legroom (one of my key criteria when purchasing a vehicle) and functional and quite visible gauges (oil pressure, charging, temperature, etc.) which are much preferred to indicator lights, though it has those as well. Visibility is excellent in the extended cab model.
My previous truck was a 1992 Mazda B2200, which I loved, but this one actually handles better and has better traction and braking (anti-lock brakes). I would have preferred a manual transmission, but this automatic was available when I needed one, and the price was right.
The original radio was "OK", but had no CD player, so I replaced it with an Alpine brand CD player. I am also considering replacing the rear speakers for better power handling.
The center fold-up console/armrest had a broken latch when I bought the truck. I've found this same condition in other Ford Rangers of similar vintage, so it must be a design problem. My now stays in place with a little Velcro.
