Author's Review
I've had my Ranger now for about 5 years. I bought it used with 41K miles on it. It is an XLT model with the SuperCab and the highly recommended 4.0 liter V-6. It has a 5-speed tranny. No air conditioning, but the rear slide window makes up for that on all but the hottest of days.
So, what do I think of my truck?
I love it! It has only let me down once, and that was recently. The problem turned out to be the ignition kill function on the alarm, so it wasn't really the truck, anyway.
I use my truck for a lot of things. It gets about 21 MPG on the highway, so it makes a decent, not great, commuter car for my 100 mile round trip to work. It has a decent sized bed, and can carry a lot of stuff. I use it for dump runs, moving, hauling my camping gear around, towing my Jeep, shopping, you name it...
The towing capacity of this truck with the 4.0L engine is 5000 lbs. The engine is rated at 155 HP and 220 ft./lbs of torque at peak rpm. I'm not sure of the torque curve, but from my experience you get almost all the torque before 3000 RPM, which is perfect for a truck. Who needs torque at 5500 RPM, where you'll never be most of the time? I like my torque down in a range where I can use it.
This is the third Ranger-based truck I've owned. I also had a '90 Ranger XLT 4WD, and an '84 Bronco II 4WD, which is based on the Ranger chassis. I've been happy with all of these trucks, and would buy one again, if I didn't currently need something bigger.
Overall this is a great truck. The SuperCab is good for young families, but older kids won't like it in the back (just ask my 15 year old daughter). The rear jump seats face sideways, and so ARE NOT GOOD for baby seats. On the other hand, it has power to spare. I once beat a BMW M3 with it in a drag race. You should have seen the look on his face...but that's another story...
