A great role playing game
Date of Review: Jan 25, 2000
As the story line goes, "Fallout places you in a world that has survived nuclear devastation. You are a member of Vault #13, an enormous bomb shelter/living area that was designed to sustain life after a nuclear war. Unfortunately, your Vault's water recycling chip has failed and you are sent into the wasteland to obtain another." This computer game has a role-playing atmosphere in which you interact with other characters while battling to the death with others. In the beginning, you choose different skills for your character that you will use to trek through populated areas, combing for information about the water chip.
The city maps are non-rotating bird's eye views, which to me are easy on the eyes. And, the graphics are top notch. Off and on you will interact with an animated character with a list of options on how you will respond. The nice part is that you can either be rude or polite. But watch what you do and say because the game keeps track of your responses and handles your destiny accordingly.
Fallout has a well thought out story and details that add to the excitement. You are on a time limit, with night and day experiences. Your character collects weapons and other items along the way with many different story branches available.
The only complaint I have is when combat starts. As a confrontation begins, you have a certain amount of moves allowed before your adversary starts his/her attack. Just switching weapons exhausts your turn. I'm more of a "shoot with no bullet limit" kind of player, but it is real, and you might enjoy the planning it takes to win a fight.
Overall, Fallout has a great feel and nice artwork but is not a fast paced game. You might be playing it out for several days.
