Author's Review
I've had my EWC177 for a bit over a month and I LOVE IT! After years of toting my laundry either to a laundromat or my mother's on weekend visits, I can finally do my laundry at home.
The quality of outcome and ease of use is wonderful! I know others have reported increased wrinkling with using all-in-ones, but I haven't had that problem. The laundry comes out clean and fluffy and it has a large load capacity.
Some things to look out for, though, are portability kits. As I have no hookup in my apartment, I needed to get something that was meant to be, or could be made to be, portable. So I bought a portability kit (could only find one vendor for over $75, but the same vendor had a kit on Ebay for $49 with no shipping/handling). The wheels on the kit are lockable to keep the unit from rolling to and fro. However, they are plastic so they tend to slip on the floor more than rubber wheels and are not adjustable so as to level the machine. They also are still free to swivel around so the machine is not stable (doesn't tip, just tries to take off like a rocket-ship during the spin cycle!).
Also, my building was built in 1976 and the floors aren't as level or strong as they used to be. So there is a lot of vibration. Being in an upstairs apartment, that doesn't bode well for "neighbor satisfaction" no matter how much I love my machine. ;~) I am looking into different casters that have rubber wheels, are able to be leveled and are "fully locking". These may cost from $7 each up to $36 each depending on where you go.
Overall, it is an absolutely wonderful machine and I have no regrets in purchasing it. You may want to purchase through a local appliance store with reputable service. In all of the reviews I've read about washer/dryer combos, those who are dissatisfied are those who get bad service. Also, since the portability kit is considered an "after market" item, the appliance store may not install the kit or cover any damage to the unit caused by the kit.
One more thing to remember is that if you are using the portability kit and the water is coming from a single source (i.e., single kitchen faucet), only the cold water should be on during the drying cycle. The unit uses cold water in order keep the machine cool during drying. If you use a wash cycle requiring hot or warm water, you may want to leave the drying time at 0 so you can switch the water supply. Or you might want to use only cold water (during the white cycle, the unit heats the water anyway so the outcome is still the same).
