Great home theatre projector
Date of Review: Oct 31, 2004
The Bottom Line: I recommend this for DVD viewing and especially for watching HD signals. Standard signals image quality varies from OK to not good.
I've had this for 3 months now and I am very impressed with the quality of the picture, especially with High Definition (HD) signals. HD signals look almost as good as tube except for fast moving pictures (I would think a common problem on most projectors). DVDs look pretty good, too. Standard signals vary from average to below average.
I originally started with placing it on my coffee table projecting on my peach colored wall to around 90" diagonal and it was pretty good. I had already ordered a ceiling mount for it ($250) and a wall-mounted 109" diagonal stationary screen ($1300). I mounted it on the ceiling and projected it on the 109" diagonal screen. The screen definitely improved the quality even though it was projected much bigger.
I've never installed a projector before but the ceiling mount and the projector had so many adjustments that even if you don't mount it perfectly, you can compensate for it. In fact, I mounted mine pretty level, but I didn't mount the projector dead center (I followed the arrow on the mount but I should've compensated for the fact that the projector lens is off to one side of the centered mount. When projecting dead on, the left side was fine but the right side was a little shorter (keystone effect, I think they call it). I was able to swivel the projector mount to the right so both left and right side are the same size and then use the adjustment on the projector to the left to have the image perfectly centered and "squared" on my screen.
I like the Color Mode options (remote controlled). I'm not sure what it does, but some sources look better in different settings. I tend to like the Natural setting, but have found some DVDs look better in the other settings. Zoom and Focus (remote controlled) are also handy.
I've seen projectors that cost $10,000 and I can't relly tell the difference, but a friend of mine can. I've heard it depends on the person so try to see a demo for yourself before purchasing.
As with any front projector, ambient lighting is an important thing to avoid. With the screen I bought, it improved resistance to ambient light but not completely. You will still need to bring down blinds/shades/curtains but the screen enables you to have a lamp on a dimmer to be on at the opposite wall of the screen.
