Product Review

Economics with an Attitude!

by   slim ,   Oct 31, 1999

Pros:  Great all around fun

Cons:  Some chapters are slightly outdated

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

This is a really funny book. O’Rourke travels the world and offers his witty and sarcastic observations on various economic realties. O’Rourke may admit to be a beginner in the field of economics and does not provide any spellbinding revelations, but he nevertheless shows a good understanding of the topic and does an excellent job when comparing the different economic systems found across the world. While this might not be O’Rourke’s funniest book, it certainly offers a good amount of insightful observations combined with enough irrelevance to make this book both interesting and fun. I recommend this book for any person interested in economics (especially macroeconomics). It would certainly add a lot of color to a sometimes overly theoretical and dry subject. On the topic of good economics books, I few other books I recommend (although none are as funny as O’Rourke’s) are “The Armchair Economist” (Landsburg), “New Ideas from Dead Economist” (Buchholz, Feldstein), “Accidental Theorist” (Krugman), “Bill Gross on Investing” (Gross) and “Hidden Order” (Friedman). If economics is not your cup of tea and you are just looking for a belly full of laughs, another author to try out would be Al Franken (perhaps better known as Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Life).
