Author's Review
P. J. O'Rourke has done it again! I have followed his writing from his National Lampoon days, through his articles for The Rolling Stone, and his highs and lows as a free-lance writer of quasi-political tracts.
Parliament of Whores and Holidays in Hell are still favorites, but now Eat the Rich is at the top of my personal list.
O'Rourke travels around the world (again -- how does he sweet-talk his editors into sponsoring these junkets?) to ask foreigners about economics -- known as "the dreary science". The result is both educational and hilarious. O'Rourke brings his own brand of semi-conservative, quasi-liberal and unabashed-libertarianism to the subject. You will go from an "ah-ha!" to a belly-laugh in an instant.
O'Rourke, in appropriately-named chapters, studies "Good Capitalism" (Wall Street), "Bad Capitalism" (Albania), "Good Socialism" (Sweden) and "Bad Socialism" (Cuba). Of Albania, O'Rourke says, "...pillboxes were no use against the force that actually invaded, which was the force of ideas...".
I heartily recommend you read this book. It transcends the boredom you might expect from an economics text, yet there is much information to ponder.
P. J. O'Rourke, at his best is a must-read. Eat the Rich is one of his best.
