Author's Review
Is Earth 2140 just another follower of the Command and Conquer chain? Some people may think so. There are so many carbon copied strategic games that it is hard to say which ones are good and which ones are bad. The basic mission and intent of playing earth 2140 is the same but there is a whole lot of unexplained information left out. Earth 2140 may be a copy but it is an extraordinary one at that.
First of all, the graphics are breathtaking and very unique to the game. Out of all the computer-related strategic games, this one has by far the most realistic graphics. They even exceed the ones used in the other Command and Conquer games. This takes place mainly in the fact that some of the technology used in this game are actual, contemporary tanks rather than the "things" that are used in Command and Conquer. The missions are supreme, numerous, large, and increase in excellence and size as you improve in the game. Earth 2140's music is quite strange but has a multifarious legion of tones. The music doesn't fit the atmosphere of the game too well but it is interesting to hear the diversity in these computer created intonations anyway. The game's replay value is extremely strong and will attract you for at least a few months. Having two sides helps the replay value out to a high degree. Not only are there two sides, but there are three difficulty settings also! You can set the game on easy, medium, or hard. The most interesting part of the game, is exploring each level's vast area to determine where the enemy's base is located. The technology is unquestionably one asset I am proud to say is original and different from any other strategic game I've ever seen. The different technology used on the ground, in the air, and on the bodies of water work in perfect harmony. Finally, the geography in each level is extremely realistic with the layout of many land masses spread out vastly throughout the level. Each land form, used correctly to its full potential, determines who has the lead in defensive capabilities and in a small battle.
The main plot of the game is obviously to defeat your enemy. There are two militaries you can play as, The Eurasian Dynasty (E.D.) or the United Civilized States (U.C.S.). After a century of fighting underground with nuclear bombs, the Earth has drastically changed with all of Australia and most of Africa being totally annihilated with nuclear bombs and radiation. In the year 2140, both sides decide to finally move out from their underground bases to retrieve the rare and precious resources and to defeat the other side for world domination. The E.D. uses actual tanks and a slow but reliable way to defeat the U.C.S. Their ion weapons and nuclear bombs are armaments that you don't want to fight against in a battle. The U.C.S. uses waves of these two-legged machine-like things and a fast, crude, and neglect way to defeat the E.D. Their abundant array of plasma technology makes them the perfect match in close combat on the battle field.
From the extensive positive considerations, comes the few negatives. Earth 2140 is a culminating game, but even the best have a few negatives. First of all, the game sometimes slows down for no reason in the middle of a battle. It doesn't happen very much and it doesn't last very long but it can get annoying after awhile. The basic mission and predetermination for playing the game is not very different than other strategic games but all of the other original ideas for this game surpasses this negative. The most notable negative is the fact that the game has no sound. In some cut scenes and in the introduction there is some sound but when you are actually playing the game, there are no sounds of explosions, firing, etc. I guess the reason for this is complete concentration in the game. But still, Earth 2140 could use embody some perceptible sounds. The only other negative aspect about the game that I can think of is the fact that more areas of the world were not considered in making this game. Sure, there is a capacious amount of levels, but they all exist in the same areas of the world. All of these negatives are very small and barely affect the game at all, but these are literally the only problems with the game, no matter how small.
Overall, if you love the Command and Conquer and Red Alert kind of games, you'll want this game to add to your collection. Earth 2140 is a nice break from the technology and levels of Command and Conquer yet holds the same basic intent of defeating the other side to become more powerful. It is a game that so many people have rejected but these people never really sat down and truly played the game. The game play is very enchanting but, sometimes, if you get stuck on a level, the game may become boring. Mainly, with the variety of technology, levels, and geography, the game play will become the greatest part of the game and will always keep you interested in playing. Finally and most importantly, if you are not fond of strategic or military games, this game is not for you. For this game, to people not interested into strategy, may be thought of as just another follower of the Command and Conquer type of games.
