Dyson vacuum, a husbands perspective

Date of Review: Oct 29, 2009

The Bottom Line:  Pricey, but great vaccum if you can find on sale.
First off, I want to say that I'm writing this from "the husbands perspective".   Why?  Because typically most husbands could care less what vacuum cleaner we have.  Me included.

For about a year or more, my wife complained that we needed a new vacuum.   I kept telling her that the old one was fine.  (and it was, or so I thought).   It was an older cheap Hoover that used a bag.  It got up a lot of the surface dirt, which is all that we saw.

She'd been wanting a Dyson, even though she didn't vacuum that much either.    I didn't want to spend how much they want for a Dyson.

Finally, we saw some close outs at Big Lots and they had the Dyson Sthe carpet.

Features:
The vacuum has a "built in hose" for using in hard to reach areas.  The hose just slides out of the handle.  Great for sucking up random spider webs, etc.

Clear waste catcher on it allows you to see what you're catching up and if you hit "dirty areas".   You'd never guess you had that much dirt in your carpet before.

The ball roller on the bottom of it makes it extremely easy to turn.  Much easier than using an old style vacuum.

You have the ability to turn off the rotating brushes on the front if you're vacuuming something like hardwood floors and don't want to risk scratching them.

The unit also comes with several hand tools to attach to the hose.

First time use:
You have to put it together, which isn't super simple, but not that hard.   It's basically popping the pieces together.  But since it doesn't look like a normal old style vacuum cleaner, it can confuse you.

After that you just turn it on and vacuum.

What I really liked about it was two things.   How much dirt it sucked up and also how well it turns on the "ball roller".

The first time we used it we had to empty it twice.   It picked up that much dirt that our old vacuum wasn't getting out of the carpet.

Toughness factor:
It seems like it's just not built as tough as the older vacuums.   I'm afraid some of the plastic on it might not last the life span of how long most people own vacuums.   But I've not heard any horror stories about any breaking either.

What I don't like:
About the only thing I don't like about it is that the cord is too short.  But this is a common problem with a lot of vacuums.     It would be really nice for them to include a longer cord, especially considering the extra cost this vacuum is priced at.

Would I recommend you buying one:
Yes, if you want to pay that much.   Look for deals at Big Lots and also consider the Kenmore cyclone type vacuum as it was a best rated in Consumer Reports, along with the Dyson's.

Summary:
GREAT vacuum if you can find one decently priced on sale somewhere.   Otherwise I just can't see paying $499 for a vacuum.

The only reason I didn't rate it 5/5 Excellent is that there is no reason this should be priced this high.
