2002 Dakota Sport Club Cab - I want rid of it!

by   NisMax ,   Jul 17, 2004

Pros:  I can get rid of it in January.

Cons:  Horrible mileage for V6, frequent problems requiring service, poor wet road traction

The Bottom Line:  I wouldn't recommend this truck to anyone. I'm just hoping I can get rid of it before it falls out of warranty. Biggest mistake I ever bought.

Author's Review

In January 2004, we were in the market for another vehicle. Our trusty 95 Maxima was well into the 300k mile range and had finally started showing it's age in the way of worn out CV joints and a whine coming from the engine compartment.
Some previous credit issues had left us with few choices for financing, but through a credit rebuilding program we were able to get financed... with a few catches. The vehicle had to be 2002 or newer with less than 21000 miles and still fall in a certain price range (not too high, but not too low either). We had decided earlier we'd like to get a truck so we were faced with the choice of 2 different Chevy S-10s or this Dakota. We definitely did not want an S10. So we took the Dakota for a drive. Seemed solid enough. The bed rails had a few minor scratches and a small dent, at least we knew it had been used to haul SOMETHING. We took it home with 21,661 miles on it.
Over the next few days we noticed a slightly rough idle in the truck. We figured maybe it was just bad gas, or it had gotten some condensation in the tank due to the recent cold weather.
Two weeks after taking the truck home I had it at the local Dodge dealership. The check engine light had come on. Diagnostics showed a leak in the evaporative system. They tested it and found no leak. A TSB released by Dodge recommended a flash ROM upgrade to the computer. Truck came home with updated software and a sticker. Two weeks later the light was back. This time a pressure test showed a vacuum leak and a hose was replaced. The idle seemed to smooth out a little, but still not what we expected.
Three months later the light was back and the idle was as rough as ever. The code showed another evap leak. A "large" one this time. Yet another vacuum hose replaced and Dodge assured me the idle was as smooth (or in this case rough) as it could be for a 3.9L V6. I still don't buy that story since the gas milage has been declining ever since we got the truck. I was getting 18mpg driving the truck back and forth to work (half interstate, half open back roads) when I first got the truck. Now it's scraping up a measly 16mpg!
When I picked up the truck from service this time, the passenger side floorboard was FLOODED! It had been a rainy day, so we assumed someone had left a door cracked or something when they parked the truck. They vacuumed the water out and sent us home. But the water returned.
Back to the dealership it goes. This time they disassembled the truck looking for leaks! Interior, seats, dash, even the BED was removed. When I picked it up they said they had to reseal the "cab exhuaster vents". Still have no idea where those are as the service writer knew nothing about it and the tech had already left for the day.
In the matter of 48 hours the floorboard was once again covered in water. This time they deduced that the AC drain had somehow started leaking into the floorboard.
I may be too picky, but 5 trips to the dealership in 5 months seems a bit much to me. The truck, luckily, is still under the factory warranty so we didn't have to pay for any of this work... but having to leave my truck there all day while they work on it is rather inconvenient! Good thing we never sold the trusty Maxima!
On another note, the wet weather performance of this truck is horrible! It left he dealership with brand new tires (still had the "whiskers" on 'em) and it will spin like mad on wet pavement.
The financing program is set up just to establish a reference. My salesman told me it works best if you keep the truck between 12-18 months. Well I have news for Mr. Dakota. AS soon as January rolls back around, that truck will find itself back on the lot and me with another Nissan.
