Author's Review
Back when I got my first computer, this was one of the first games I got. I was recommended to me by a person I know, and seing as how I didn't exactly have any PC knowledge back then,I took them up on the offer. And I have enjoyed this game for many, many years. In fact, most of my teenage life took place on Battle.net, the service that you play this game online with.
Graphics:
The graphics are lovely, really nice. Despite the games age, the graphics are still up to par with games being made these days. The way the graphics are prerendered enables it to do this so well. Yeah, the graphics are prerendered, so if you dont like that, this game probobly isn't for you. I know many people who refuse to play a game just based on the fact that it has prerendered graphics. For example, look at Resident Evil popularity before Resident Evil 4 came out, just one way to look at it...
Story:
"The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals," says one of the townspeople you meet when you first start the game. And after that, you are going to head to the church and fight your way down 15 levels of enemies all the way to the bottom, where the final battle takes place. The town is Tristram is where you start the game, and the whole game takes place in this one town, which really is all you need. The story isn't complex by any means, but the quests and the character are enough to keep you intersted toward the end.
Gameplay:
Gameplay consists of equipping weapons to your character, clicking on monsters to kill them, picking up whatever treasure they left behind, and repeating this process over again. Occasionally going to town to sell what you have collected and buy better things. That may not sound exciting, but if you have ever played a hack and slash RPG before you know exactly how fun it is. Its addicting for some reason, and you will not be able to put this game down until you finish it.
Online Play:
Another thing to note, is that this game was the first game that came packaged with Battle.net. Which is Blizzard Entertainments free online gaming service that is used with most of their PC games (exceptions being Warcraft 1, and World of Warcraft, World of Warcraft takes place on a completely separate server).
Diablo is an old game, and its age really shows in the online play. It has a decent number of people on, usually about 300, but the game is plagued by hacking and cheating. Hacking and cheating is done so much in this game, that some people actually dont think that they are doing anything wrong, and that it is what the game programmers intended. I love battle.net, but I dont play Diablo 1 on it anymore, the cheating just became to much. I cannot recommend that you play Diablo 1 on Battle.net if you want a good gaming experience sadly. But if you get some people you know in real life together, and play privately, the game is really fun, in some cases more fun than multiplayer that has been on some of the more recently released games.
Sound:
The sound is this game is great. I mean its REALLY good. The Tristram music is really famous now, and all the monsters make really gruesome sounds when you hit them with whatever weapon or spell you are using. When I was younger, the game really scared me, especially hearing your character yell out an evil screen as all of your hard earned equipment dropped to the ground, which then required a re-loading of where you last saved in single player.
