Product Review

Does it all-but all mediocre!

by   bjmiller48 ,   Nov 22, 2004

Pros:  Does it all, with no real problems.

Cons:  Very Honda-like. Nothing bad, and everything fine, but nothing excellent, except maybe the DVD Audio.

The Bottom Line:  Want a universal player with every possible feature, this is on the list.If you are searching for that excellent jaw dropping picture, even upconverted, you will be disappointed.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

Video: Agree with the other reviewer that the DVD picture is very uninspiring. No better than my Technics DVD-A10 or Sony NS700. I was VERY disappointed that the DVI to DVI picture was no better than the component connection, and worst of all, upconverting to 1080i made no visible difference, and 720P was worse. I specifically bought the player for the upconverting HDCP DVI feature so I am very let down. AUDIO: Here I disagree strongly with the reviewer that liked his CD's played on this unit. I find regular CD's sound edgy hard and clinical, all the things that made records sound more like real music. My previous player, the Technics DVD A10 DVD audio-video player re-mastered regular CD's so they sounded more like music.I have had many people compare the two and the Technics wins hands down. My system is very revealing of flaws, but I think people buying this unit generally have a very transparent system. ( system is Bryston electronics,Magneplanar speakers and Velodyne sub).I now have to keep the Technics unit in the system to listen to CDs! But the DVD-Audio is very good. With bass management I was able to create an electronic listening experience as close to real music as I have ever heard.
