LCD Market

Current the prices of LCDs are dropping due to stock accumulating at the manufacturers. Analyst estimate that the price for 17" LCDs will drop to $299 by the end of the year. Just something to keep in mind when considering a purchase. LCD prices are driven by supply and demand, so the price looks like a sinewave superimposed on a line sloping down. In other words, steadily dropping with ups and downs. Christmas would be a great time to pick one of these babies up.

Dell

Dell also has coupons for monitors time and again, so if you wait a week, you're like to pick up a 10-20% coupon.

I did not purchase this item for myself, but at the expense of my lab. Money was not much concern. Functionality. I believe the purchase price was around $500. This monitor was well worth the money. The screen is extremely crisp and I sit about 10 feet away working on another computer and can still make out enough to figure out what's displaying on the LCD.

Construction

The base is heavy, which good to keep it from falling over.
The swivel is excellent, I have been able to rotate to suit my various seating positions. The bevel is extremely thin compared to previous generations, which adds to the aesthetic view and takes up less air space. The heat generated by the monitor is moderate, so it's not really of any concern.

Connectors

DVI stands for Digital video interface, which is a standard that replaces old monitor connectors that went to the big clunky CRTs. Be careful of bending the pins when attaching the DVI connector. This monitor has both DVI and VGA connectors. I pays to get a DVI capable video card to ensure a crisp image. The monitor can also act as a USB hub, so you can run a usb cable from the back of your computer to your monitor and connect other accessories to the monitor. It's handy, but not a make or break feature.

Image Quality

Super sharp and good color reproduction. Not as good as apple cinema displays, but a normal person wouldn't notice.

After using this in the lab, I'm planning to pick one up at the end of the year for my own personal use.
