Pucker Up!!
Date of Review: Apr 25, 2000
DeKuyper within the several years has come out with a new line of flavored schnapps, well named the Pucker line. Although this review is on the Apple Pucker flavored schnapps, I have also seen Grape, Watermelon and Cherry. There may be others, but these are the flavors that I have seen at my local liquor store.
The DeKuyper company owns distillery's in the Netherlands, Canada and the United States. This company uses a process where alcohol is macerated in tanks along with seeds, herbs and fruit peelings.
Everyone that has tasted this schnapps that I have asked for a taste opinion has answered "Jolly Ranchers" candy. The label reads "Sweet & Sour", which I totally agree with!
The Sour Apple Pucker Schnapps is a very pale "lime green" color, which scared me right off the bat. I have to admit that I really don't care for apple "flavored" anything, but I will try to be impartial here. When first opening the bottle I get a scent that smells slightly like fresh apple cider, okay that is a bonus, I do like cider.
When pouring, even chilled it does not seem to be thickened at all, okay another bonus.
The first sip is gives a slight cider taste, then very sour. I see where the name pucker comes from. My reaction was similar to sucking on a lemon. The aftertaste is a rather sweet cidery taste. It seems to be rather light and crisp tasting. No alcohol taste at all, and at 30 proof that is not a surprise.
I have seen people add this to Sprite or 7-Up (the sweetness of the soda seems to do away with some of the "pucker"), a darker cola would certainly cover up the taste of this, not to mention make a very nasty colored drink. This does make very tasty Jell-O Shots (see my review of DeKuyper Peach Flavored Schnapps for that recipe). I have made several different shots with this including;
CARAMEL APPLE
1/2 shot Butterscotch Schnapps
1/2 shot Apple Pucker Schnapps
CINNAMON APPLE
1/2 shot Cinnamon Schnapps
1/2 shot Apple Pucker Schnapps
Although this is not to my liking as a liqueur to drink alone, it would make an interesting addition to mulled apple cider. If you like sour apple "flavor" at $7.99 per bottle you really can't lose. This is one you are either going to love or hate, I really don't think that there is a middle of the road with this one. I had to rate it as a solid performer, but can't actually recommend it to anyone unless they really like apple flavor.
