Messy Rice Cooker
Date of Review: Apr 27, 2007
The Bottom Line: Choose a different rice cooker. Maybe it's just the CRC-800 that isn't good. I've had mine 9 months now and I'm getting rid of it.
I just read the previous review, and I cannot believe that she has had no splattering of rice water/sludge when cooking rice. I have cooked anywhere from 2 to 4 of the measuring cups of rice and it ALWAYS splatters out the steam vent and around the loose-fitting lid. I tried making the lid fit better by wrapping foil, and it still does it unless the foil is really thick and securely pressed down on the pot, then it only does it a little bit. I wrote to Cuisinart about this issue and their automatic response was that they would get back to me in 2 business days. That was well over 3 weeks ago. I hate this machine and am now looking for something better. Anyone want this one at a cheap price???
I will say that the rice comes out pretty good when you use the correct measurements. That's important because the rice is measured with their cup but the water is measured with a true measuring cup. It does make a difference. The steamer feature works well but I usually use my microwave for steaming vegetables, etc. The microwave takes less electricity and time. The non-stick pan is good, but be sure to NOT use metal spoons. My husband did ONCE and there is now a scratch in the finish. It has not affected the rice though.
Another issue I have is that it doesn't have a 'ding' to notify you that the rice is done. If you don't notice the light change from red to amber, the rice stays on the heating element under an automatic 'warm' feature. However, I have found browned rice at the bottom of the pan when left too long on 'warm.'
