Author's Review
I have been getting Country Woman now for at least 5 years and absolutely love it! The magazine is not only filled with fantastic articles and recipes but is also one of the most pleasant magazine formats to look at. The entire magazine is on glossy paper and there are no advertisements. Country Woman is not only for women in rural settings, it has great tips and humorous articles throughout. I read this magazine from cover to end, and find most of it informative, if not helpful.
When opening the cover, the first regular section is a welcome into someone's country kitchen. It often shows blue prints or before and after shots. It is a good place to start if you want redecorating ideas.
The second feature is usually the editor, Ann Kaiser, doing some field work. She will head off to help a reader do their work. In this May/June 200 issue she helped on a duck farm.
There are also crafts that are usually very simple and in season. I will often get ideas here for things that can keep my children busy.
Some of my favorite regular sections in the magazine include:
From the Mouths of Little Sprouts
These are humorous saying that kids make when they mix and mince their words.
The Pictures
Grandma's Brag Page
Here there are wonderful amateur pictures of beautiful children that have usually been sent in by mom or grandmom.
then there's
Looking Back
This is pictures from the past, in sepia tones, with captions including dates and places. It is followed by an article called I Remember When that is written by a subscriber and always full of special memories that will make you smile.
The Recipes
This is one of the best features. Each recipe has been field tested and voted upon among thousands of entries bi-monthly. They run a contest among the readers and claim to make every recipe to see which is the best. Each magazine is themed, so one issue might be devoted to brownies, while the other poultry and yet another ground beef. This makes it easy to find the recipes. I keep a running list from month to month so that if I need a chicken recipe, I look on my list for which issue they're in and its easy for me to make a different meal every day of the year this way. . no repeats! They also have a page dedicated to restricted menus and give the nutritional values of each recipe here. One last food article they do is a Meals in Minutes page where if you need a fast dinner, you can just open to this page and have dinner on the table usually within the half hour.
My Most Embarrassing Moment
These articles are incredibly funny and usually are from wives who were originally from the city moving to the country. . trying to make it as a Farm Wife. There is also an article following call Why Country Woman Age Fast and its the same kind of embarrassing humor.
Ask the Antiques Expert
This is a page dedicated to people curious about their favorite heirlooms and treasures. Readers send in pictures and descriptions and the appraiser will reply with information and prices.
There are tips from food preparation to decorating and articles from the heart on families and past rememberances.
I highly recommend this magazine if you have anyone who likes to read, or cook, or craft.
It is put out by Reiman Publications and you an usually get a free sample magazine, which is what got me hooked so many years ago. It is bi-monthly . .cover price is 3.50 but I think you can get a year for somewhere around 14.00. This makes a great gift for the newly married.
