Child of God

Date of Review:  May 1, 2003
The Bottom Line: intriguing study of the criminal mind, causes many knee-jerk reactions to its surface depravity and violence, but a deeper read reveals much more than first appears
Review: Cormac McCarthy's 1973 novel, Child of God received little attention when first published. What little attention it did receive was mostly divided, as any one reading the book today could easily understand. It is a very difficult novel to define. It...

American Poster Child

Date of Review:  Aug 10, 2009
The Bottom Line: I'm giving this books 3 stars, but it's probably closer to two and a half. I recommend it, but be warned that it's a thick read!
Review: The first book I read by Cormac McCarthy was, of course, 2006's The Road, which won him a Pulitzer Prize and garnered him the most attention in his long tenure as self-professed social shun. What made that book so great was how visceral and dark it...

My suspicions about Tennesseans are apparently well-founded

Date of Review:  Feb 2, 2007
The Bottom Line: As grim as Southern Gothic gets. Absurd in its absolutely dire depiction of an already lowly soul reduced to the depths of crime and degradation.
Review: When it comes to Southern Gothic novels, I don't think it gets much more nihilistic than Child of God. When you consider that the genre boasts such cynical and sinister-minded individuals as Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Erskine Caldwell, that's...

A complete, utter failure

Date of Review:  Oct 8, 2009
The Bottom Line: No matter what I do, I cannot square this terrible novel with the rest of McCarthy's utterly brilliant style.  I cannot express just how much you should avoid it.
Review: Two things first. Cormac McCarthy is an author whose focus is on the artistry of language and narrative. The audience must conform to his style rather than him fitting his talents in the opposite direction—and he has the bona fides to justify this...
