Author's Review
I drove this truck from nashville, tennessee to delta junction alaska, 4255 miles in four days. It was quite possibly the most comfortable driving experience that i have ever had. the seats are 6 position fully adjustable power leather with heat. After i was informed that i would be leaving ft campbel and going to alaska i decided that i needed a 4x4 truck instead of my 2WD job so I went shopping around for various model. I owned a dodge and was leaning that way but there were certain requirements, not the least of which was price, that had to be met. I thought I was settling on a 2001 chevy extended cab silverado. Boy was I wrong. It had 80k when i bought it so the first thing i did was take it to the oil change place and have all of the fluids flushed and replaced with synthetic oils. i was worried about the miles because i was pulling a 1500 pound trailer the whole way, little did i know that there was no need for concern. the 5.3L engine was flawless. It handled the load and cruised at 80 mph the whole way and never got over 3000 rpm until I hit the mountains. the extended cab had plenty of room for my luggage and the short bed was perfect for my 2 large plastic containers that had my survival kit in them(i was driving in march in canada)and the rolling cover kept it all dry. I was surprised at how well it handled the road and the winding mountain pass, for a 4x4 it handled better than the dodge 2WD i traded for it. by the time i reached denver on the first day i was tired but not sore at all, my back was fine and my neck wasn't tense at all, the comfort level was amazing. when i got to the mountains again i was surprised at the power this truck had, it took the hills with ease and the transmission operated perfectly in the downshifts. when i arrived at the canadian border on day 2 I had already come to the conclusion that i would never own a truck that wasn't a GM product again. I have owned a ford and a dodge and they weren't even close in any category. I paid 17000 for the truck which was 4000 under book at the time and all i could think when the trip was over was "man, what a steal" it now has 150000 miles and still runs as good as the day it came off of the assymbly line. I have added a 4 inch lift, 35 in tires, grill guard and witerized it for the harsh alaskan climate and still it handles better than the 2002 dodge quadcab i traded for it. i have since bought a GMC Sierra for my fiancee and she is sold on it.
