Brother MFC-7829B Critical of noise, paper jambs, and crooked envelope printing.
Date of Review: Dec 1, 2007
The Bottom Line: I gave the MFC7820N a fair try prior to returning it. Avoid the pain and buy the Canon MF4150
I purchased the Brother MFC-7820N Laser Flatbed All in one because of the favorable reviews that I read on Epinions.com as well as other sites. It was kind of a toss up between the Brother and the Canon MF4150 but I chose the Brother because I thought that the cost per printed page would be a little less. I probably print about 7500 pages per year.
I am running Vista Home Premium.
The Brother drivers did not self install as advertised. Encountered some problem installing the drivers but will not make a big deal about that.
After the MFC-7820 was up and running, I was surprised about how noisy the unit was, even in the active standby mode. There was a constant annoying fan whine/hum which was very distracting in my home business office.
I had see some negative comments regarding the problems that other users had when printing envelopes. I soon realized that their complaints were valid. No matter how you feed the envelopes into the tiny manual feel slot, the printing on the envelopes, especially the return address, comes out crooked. This is not acceptable for a professional product.
I do quite a bit of copying so the auto document feeder is an important feature. Unfortunately, I found that there were regular paper jambs unless the paper was in perfect flat condition. A creased piece of opened mail correspondence that was unfolded and flattened prior to insertion into the auto document feeder would routinely jamb.
After a week trying to accept or ignore the flaws in this unit, I packed it up and returned it to Staples where I had purchased it.
I replaced it with the Canon MF4150. I am happy to say that the Canon works perfectly in the short time that I have used it.
This is only the 2nd epinion that I have ever submitted. Hopefully it will save someone the hassle.
