Author's Review
I am probably not the typical buyer of this product but it started because I wanted a copier for my home. I looked at a very small canon scanner ( Lide60) that, when hooked to a computer with a printer would make copies. I came pretty close to buying it because it was so compact, but then started looking at the Brother MFC-420CN - which is a multi function a copier, printer and scanner ( and fax ) and document feeder all in one. While it is compact for all those functions, I decided not to purchase it when I found out from other reviews that it uses a lot of ink and that if you run dry on color ink it won't make black and white copies. Though I didn't want it for color, I read that it uses the color ink as part of its cleaning so you would need to replace color cartridges even if you didn't print in color. I then started looking at this Brother - which definitely takes up more space but is a laser printer not an ink jet. I already have the Brother HL-2040 printer and like it a lot and the DCP seems like they stuck a document feeder on top of the HL2040 ( based on the specs, they also gave it more memory). So far I have had it a month and love it. As for printing - it is a laser and does a great job. The copier works just like the one where I work ( except that it can't make doubled sided copies ( actually it can but not as easily). Scanning is great . The software lets you scan with OCR - so you can convert it into your word processing program, or scan it as a black and white or color photo, or to save it for archival purposes - like pdf or TIF. Rather than having to change settings, it has a custom software menus that you can program so that when you click a button - it will scan based on certain setting. I only used the OCR once as a test but it was very accurate. I was most surprised about how well the document feeder works. At this price range I thought it would be cheesy but it has worked very well. You can also use the software to set up the copier so that it prints on both sides ( actually, you put your document in the feeder, run it through, then take the copies and put them back in the machine and it prints the other side of the copies). It does take longer than a true duplex copier, but it is still fairly cool. It also works as a stand alone copier - even with the computer turned off, it will print copies and you have options such as #copies, enlarge / reduce, contrast, just like a true copier. About the only negatives are that the controls on the copier are not that intuitive when you try to adjust the machine settings ( of course you can use the software controls and they are very clear), and the toner cartridges cost about $50 - though I think Brother says they will last 2500 pages. Since I use it for home use only, I can't speak about how it will hold up to heavy use - though it looks good to me. All in all a great home copier, scanner, printer.
