Product Review

Nice for individual or small office use

by   frankflynn ,   Jan 31, 2006

Pros:  Great Value, software just works, easy to set up (hardware and software)

Cons:  slower on complex documents

The Bottom Line:  Good value, feature rich, networking included and software that just works.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I had an HP G55 at home (about 5 years old) an an HP 6200 at work (new) and these are nice printers but they gave me many headaches with their cursed software.

I have several Macintosh computers all running OS X 10.4.

So I decided to try a different brand - the Brother 420 had nice reviews (the 620 is the 420 with an answering machine and speaker phone). I had some issues with the G55 fighting with my answering machine so I wanted the answering machine in the unit.

This is a fine printer. It has a slightly flimsy feel to it (it's light and small - half the size of the HP G55, somewhat smaller than the HP 6200) but I've found it up to the job (I've had it for almost 3 months now).

One significant advantage over both those HP units is the network adapter is built in; no need to purchase anything else (HP requires you to share through your PC or buy a box well over $100)

The software installed and just worked!!! Even Mac's that don't have any extra software installed can print to it (it shows up as a 'Bonjour' printer). But if you want to use the scanner or have access to all of the options you need to install the Brother SW.

I'm using it on my network - all features work well over the network (I had read a review saying the scanner did not work over the network -- it does work fine at least for Mac OS).

The other features (memory card reader, answering machine, copier, fax, speaker phone) all work as desired. I've had one paper jam (printing checks - the HP jammed with these checks often too) but this unit is much easier to clear the jam as the top opens fully.

It is slightly slower printing than the HP was not noticeable on simple text documents but noticeable on photos. The print quality is similar (I am not a professional photographer or anything that requires perfect photos).

You probably wouldn't want it as the only printer in a busy office.
