Author's Review
I read this book almost a year ago exactly. My husband and I have since paid of thousands of dollars in debt and for the first time since we got married we are no longer living paycheck to paycheck.
Did the book do this? No, but without Dave's advice I seriously doubt we would have come this far.
This book is great because it is not preachy. It is also not written by some rich guy who has never had any money problems. It is written by a rich guy who was rich once before and lost it ALL. Then he got it all back. If that doesn't prove his system works then I don't know what does.
This book gave me the courage to go into my wallet and cut up all my credit cards. I thought I needed them to get by each month but I really didn't.
Dave takes you through each of his little babysteps. First, you save $1000 for emergencies, then you begin to pay off debt. It seems too simple to work, or too easy to need to read this book, but reading the book is one of the most helpful parts.
We really have been brainwashed into believing that we can't live without some type of debt. Dave explores all of these myths and tells you the truth about them. Then he gets into his plan. Once you pay off the debt, he takes you through the other important steps of fully funding your emergency fund, saving for retirement, college and the like.
It took me a long time to get my husband on board with our finances, but this book helped me do that. I showed him how we should be out of debt in 4 years (that is only if we pay nothing extra and we plan to pay extra) and then all of the money going to our debt is ours to save, spend, etc. We won't ever need credit cards again.
Dave's conversational tone and witty remarks and stories make this a really quick read. The best part is, you don't need to read the whole book to get started. And, just getting some knowledge about debt is a great starting point. This is one of my all time favorite non-fiction books.
