Tori Tells Lots of Scandalous Stories

Being a huge fan of Beverly HIlls 90210, until Kelly decided not to marry Brandon, then I went on strike, I was very excited when Tori Spelling annonced that she was writing a biography. Spelling played the ditzy Donna Martin and also happenend to be the daughter of executive producer Aaron Spelling. In her first novel, Stori Telling, Spelling takes aim at rumours and humorously tells the story of her childhood and her volatile relationship with her mother Candy.

Spelling admits that yes she her family was ridiculously rich. Yes, her father trucked in snow one Christmas so she and her brother Randy could play in it. Yes, her mother is difficult to get along with. But in reality Tori's life was never in her own hands until she ran away from a loveless marriage and starting living her own life by her own rules.

The 90210 gossip is very brief but Tori goes into her complicated relationship with Shannen Doherty. Everyone in the industry knew that Shannen was a spoiled brat but Tori got sucked into the drama and participated immature stuff like ignoring Jennie Garth on set, dating bad boys who stole her hard earned paychecks and hooking up with cast-mates. Don't expect Spelling to go into detail regarding those hookups. Spelling also talks in detail about her failed marriage to a theater producer and her affair with Dean McDermott a struggling and very married Canadian actor.

I loved the honest tone of this book. Spelling gives the real deal on her inheritance and admits that the $800,000 check (minus taxes) surprised her to begin with, but then she realized that her father really didn't know much about money. In turn she herself wasn't properly educated and she blew through a lot of her money but I was happy that she took responsibility for that! I didn't feel like Spelling was asking for sympathy, in fact it was almost defiant, a way to tell her side of the story with her mother's interference. The book takes an unexpected sad turn when Spelling discusses the death of her father and her mother's affair with the man who was her father's close friend. Very scandalous but Spelling deals with this revelation in matter of fact terms. Sure, her mom had an affair while her father was dying, but she was an adult and has to live with her own decisions.

Stori Telling will be successful because Spelling is honest and open about her life. Readers should be able to relate to her mistakes, her passion for her husband and her love for all of her closest friends. Spelling is currently writing the follow up novel about being a mommy in Hollywood and if it's anything like this novel, I'll make sure to read it.
