Misplaced ideals

I believe Death of a salesman to be an excellent play. At the heart of it is a lovable salesman who has some regrets, just like the rest of us. But Willie's real error is his misplaced beliefs. He believes in the American Dream to the extent that he knows nothing else. He is a salesman, no more. This extremely limits his ability to interact with his loved ones, so their relationship is only a mirage. He is his work. I believe this to be relevant because most of us aren't lucky enough to do work which will help society on a grand scale. We do the 9 to 5 thing to support ourselves. Some of us with a greater monetary reward, some with less. But the meaning of life does not reside in the office. Paraphrasing Jackie Robinsons tombstone, A life is insignificant except in the lives it touches.
